We often battled sastrugi, wave like snow sculptures created by the Arctic winds. They looked like small snow dunes, and for a moment I was reminded of the sand dunes of the Sahara I saw during the Marathon des Sables.
Every time we tried to ski forward our pulk would catch on an icy ridge, and only budged after frantic twisting and pulling. It was frustrating but luckily the sastrugi fields we came across were only small and it was not long before we were free of this icy menace and back on track to reach the coast.
