With hazy blue sky and white ice permanently fixed on the horizon, it felt like we were on a track to nowhere. Occasionally the monotony of the fjord crossing was interrupted by the excitement of spotting paw prints or skiing past an abandoned coal mine but, for the most part, we kept our heads down and focused on grinding out the kilometres.
Eventually we turned inland and finally the landscape began to change as we entered rolling valleys, which we would follow all the way to the east coast of the island.
