The Weems and Plath 24-inch Parallel Ruler in an attractive brushed aluminium is primarily intended for use in commercial shipping situations where navigators find that its extra-long 24-inch construction with rigid chrome arms and handles meet their needs especially well.
Parallel rulers are used to plot direction on nautical charts. They are two straight-edges hinged together so that they maintain the same angle. By alternating the moving edge and securely holding down the non-moving edge, a navigator can move the rulers about the chart while still maintaining a constant angle.
