From 1 January 2010, the AIS-SART has been adopted into the GMDSS regulations as an alternative to the standard Radar-SART.

Technically, the AIS-SART is based on the following principles; the unit will be programmed from the manufacturer with a unique ID code (not specific to the vessel) and receives its position via an internal GPS antenna.

This data is combined and transmitted using the international AIS channels (AIS A and AIS B) in the maritime VHF band. The ID code appears on all installed AIS transponders and connected equipment, an AIS-SART will be seen on an electronic chart as a circle with a built-in cross.
